Hidden all around us, bees work silently. Despite their essential role, few people realize how much we depend on these tiny workers. They are responsible for 35% of the world's agricultural production—honey, wax, and so much more. I could go on explaining in detail why this fascinating insect deserves more attention, but that’s not the focus of this article (lucky for you!).
Today, I want to talk about beeswax candles and why they are a better choice than the paraffin candles you may already know.
What is beewax?
Beeswax is produced by the abdominal glands of bees. Initially, it is transparent, but as bees manipulate it to build honeycombs—the famous hexagonal cells where honey is stored—the wax becomes opaque and yellow as we know it. When melted and filtered, it regains its white appearance.
Why choose a beewax candle over a regular commercial candle?
First, beeswax candles last longer than regular candles and produce a hotter flame. Unlike beeswax candles, paraffin candles require chemical additives to extend their burn time. It’s also important to note that paraffin is a petroleum-based product, meaning that once lit, it breaks down into particles that float in the air and can be inhaled by anyone nearby. In addition to being a polluting petroleum product, paraffin contains several components (such as benzene) known to be carcinogenic.
Beeswax, on the other hand, requires no human intervention to be produced—bees naturally create it to store their honey. Moreover, beeswax candles release a subtle honey scent naturally, are hypoallergenic, and do not cause headaches.
Finally, choosing beeswax candles means supporting local artisans and appreciating the expertise of beekeepers who care for our precious bees.
